Florida suspends abortion clinic after hospitalizations

An abortion clinic that serves women from all over the southern United States had its licence suspended this weekend by Florida health officials under an emergency order after two women who had undergone procedures at the clinic were hospitalised this year.

The state Agency for Health Care Administration has ordered the suspension of American Family Planning of Pensacola's licence, which will take effect on Saturday.

The clinic failed to monitor patients at all times in the cases cited by the agency, failed to provide medical records when patients were transferred for greater care, and failed to contact patients within 24 hours after they left the clinic to assess their recovery, according to the order issued on Friday.
The problems were described as operational deficiencies "endangering the health, safety, and welfare" of the clinic's patients, and the clinic failed to report the incidents to the state agency on time.

In one instance, clinic workers urged a patient's husband to take her to a hospital in Mobile, Alabama, rather than a nearby hospital in Pensacola that had a transfer agreement with the clinic, causing her treatment to be delayed. According to the emergency order, the woman needed to be resuscitated and a transfusion to replace blood loss at the Alabama hospital.

In another March case, a patient with bleeding and low blood pressure was taken to the emergency room of a Pensacola hospital. She required emergency surgery, and a hysterectomy was performed by a surgeon. According to the emergency order, a third patient required uterine perforation repair last year.

The emergency order stated that "women receiving abortions must receive the level of care and services mandated by law."
The clinic has the right to a hearing on the decision.
