The Star chairman John O’Neill resigns ahead of inquiry grilling





Executive chairman of the Star Entertainment Group, John O'Neill, has resigned ahead of a public grilling at an inquiry into the company's Sydney casino licence.

The crisis-hit company announced late Friday afternoon on the ASX that O'Neill had tendered his resignation and would "step down from the board with a departure date to be agreed."
"Mr O'Neill informed fellow directors of his decision late today," the statement said. "Mr O'Neill will hand over his chair and executive responsibilities in a timely and orderly fashion."

O'Neill is the latest senior executive to leave The Star since the explosive investigation into its suitability for a casino licence began in March, joining chief executive Matt Bekier, chief financial officer Harry Theodore, and a handful of other top executives and directors on the list.

Authorities on the Gulf Coast of Mexico said seven men’s bodies were found  dumped  on a roadway in the Huasteca region, according to an Associated Press report. The Huasteca region is a popular spot for Mexican tourists who enjoy its waterfalls and crystalline rivers. Prosecutors in San Luis Potosi stated late Thursday the men may have been killed elsewhere and their bodies later dumped in the rural area where they were found. The Taliban orders all Afghan women to cover their faces in public

  Over two decades after 9/11 and George W. Bush's invasion of Afghanistan to overthrow the Taliban - which included officials arguing for the need (among other reasons offered) to secure women's rights in Central Asia - we've now come full circle... According to the Associated Press, "Afghanistan's Taliban leadership orders all Afghan women to wear the all-covering burqa in public," citing a new Saturday ruling. This means that women will no longer be able to show their faces in public. The burqa, which is now required, goes far beyond the hijab, which is typical in Sunni Islam and merely covers the hair; instead, the burqa prevents any skin, including that on the face, from being exposed at all. Setback for Bill Gates: Sweden cancels his controversial project to dim the Sun

The Swedish Space Corporation (SSC) announced that the flight to test the possibility of dimming the sun’s rays’ incidence on the Earth, planned for June, would not go ahead. “The scientific community is divided regarding geoengineering, including any related technology tests such as the planned technical balloon test flight from Esrange this summer,” the SSC said in a statement, Asia Pacific Daily  reported  April 2.  Bill Gates has funded the controversial project proposed this time by Harvard University as the Controlled Stratospheric Perturbation Experiment, or SCoPEx, which attempts to disperse a calcium carbonate (chalk) cloud into the atmosphere from a high-altitude balloon to study its effects on sunlight reaching Earth. The first attempt scheduled for June would send the first balloon with 600 kg of scientific equipment onboard over the Swedish city of Kiruna located in the Arctic.
